Soil solarization provides weed control for limited-resource and organic growers in warmer climates. California Agriculture 59 (2):84-89. PDF Abstract: This paper describes the use of soil solarization technology for weed management, as conducted by the University of California Kearney Research and Extension Center for 8 years. The project consists of laboratory development, small-plot experimentation and on-farm validation of data in San Joaquin Valley specialty crops. Based on the weed research conducted and the small-scale tests on parsley, all of the solarization treatments were equally effective in providing weed control, with weed numbers reduced by 86-94% and weed biomass reduced by 94-99% over the untreated control. Furthermore, in an on-farm study in Fresno-Clovis area of San Joaquin Valley during 1997-99, solarization provided effective weed control for strawberries at a much lower cost than methyl bromide, with comparable yields. Alternatives to methyl bromide treatments for stored-product and quarantine insects.

Methyl bromide is used to control insects as a space fumigant in flour and feed mills and ship holds, as a product fumigant for some fruit and cereals, and for general quarantine purposes. Methyl bromide acts rapidly, controlling insects in less than 48 h in space fumigations, and it has a wide spectrum of activity, controlling not only insects but also nematodes and plant-pathogenic microbes. ...

Alternatives to Methyl Bromide for Durables and Timber

Methyl bromide (MB) has a number of desirable features as a fumigant for durable commodities and timber including a rapid speed of treatment, low infrastructure requirements, recognition by quarantine authorities, broad registration for use, good penetrant ability, and rapid airing after exposure. There is, however, a range of existing and potential alternatives to MB which, alone or in combina...

BIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY OF ESSENTIAL OILS FROM LEAVES AND FRUITS OF PEPPER TREE (Schinus molle L.) TO CONTROL RICE WEEVIL (Sitophilus oryzae L.)

Rice weevil (Sitophilus oryzae L.) is a primary insect pest of stored grain. The development of resistance resulted in the application of synthetic insecticides. In recent years many plant essential oils have provided potential alternatives to currently used insect control agents. The Brazilian pepper tree (Schinus molle L. var. areira (L.) DC.) (Anacardiaceae) has different biological properti...

What to Consider when Emission Reduction is Required from Soil Fumigation

Emission is one of the key factors affecting fumigant use in California due to regulations. Many commodities depend on pre-plant soil fumigation to achieve profitable yield and healthy crops. The phase-out of methyl bromide as a broad-spectrum soil fumigant in pest control has placed formidable challenges in searching alternatives. Most alternatives registered today are highly regulated because...
